Ten artists, ten friends, their creativity spanning almost half a century have
been invited to contribute their work to this unprecedented exhibition including
major works from the permanent collection at the Odessa Art Museum as well as
private collections and selected works from the artists' studios. United by
the same ideals but distinguished by uniqueness of styles and languages there
is, nevertheless, a firm bond between the artists underlined by a shared philosophy.
In the 1950s most of these artists were still young students. Their ideas have
given roots in the short-lived "thaw" of the Krushchev era of the
1960s and blossomed in the 1970s. During that time, many of the artists had
to fight the temptation of being sanctioned official state artists. Instead,
they focused on the so-called "apartment exhibitions" - a cornerstone
and showcase of the non-conformist artistic movement which flourished in Odessa,
Moscow and Leningrad.
